!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! due to an inability for the two megacorporations to find a price that satisfactorily screws the customer fair transaction fee for customers purchasing their goods with Visa cards. The rollout starts July 18th in the economic powerhouse city of Thunder Bay, with details of a further timeline being nonexistent at the time.

So, tl;dr: why not shop at Crappy Tire?

Really?

We don’t accept Amex at the U.K. stores (mostly because the vast majority of U.K. people don’t have Amex) but Visa and Mastercard are pretty 50-50 really and to shut down Visa usage is crazy.

Yeah, I only have a Visa (one credit card is enough for me). It’s pretty ridiculous when you think about it, but apparently Walmart isn’t willing to pay as much as Visa wants them to on transaction fees.

This may actually be tied to the recent change in Costco’s payment process. For years, they only took Amex and debit cards. Starting June 20 (interesting coincidence on the date), Costco will start taking Visa only (and debit cards). Of course, Walmart owns Sam’s Club, which is Costco’s biggest rival in the warehouse store business. So Sam’s will be MC only, while Costco will be Visa only. Interesting.

Aww, sounds like they want to be like Canadian Target.

To be fair, Sam's Club is horrible.

We’ve been Costco customers for 20 years or more. I haven’t been inside a Sam’s in ages, though I’d be interested to have a look. I detest shopping at Walmart, so this is no tragedy for me.

Meh... I use Mastercard. I used to use VISA and when I was younger, VISA used to be the king of credit cards. Not sure what mistakes they’ve been making over the past 20+ years that caused their popularity to decline.

Other competition in the marketplace?

That is crazy. Each merchant charges along the same lines really.

Here in the U.K. we bank the Bank of England who print cash, in Scotland there are three bank that issue banknotes, the Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank (Northern Ireland is another issue and itself complicated). Each charge a fee to bank with them so unlike most of the south of England where it’s pretty much English notes they will only pay one fee. Here up in the north of England we have to pay four fees because of Scottish and English bank notes but that is because it’s legal tender and the cost of doing business.

Dealing with both the two largest card issuers is the cost of doing business.

Well AMEX and Mastercard were around back then too. Maybe they (Mastercard in particular) started poaching VISA staff and then started getting aggressive. But that’s just a guess.

Hmmm... according to this:

Visa is still king...

When I worked at Wickes I occasionally got Clydesdale notes, always weird.

Not so much now but we used to get NI £5 notes which were plastic.

Though NI bank notes are legal, they aren’t ‘legal tender’ even in Northern Ireland but they are accepted (hell, it’s very long and drawn out much more than that).

Of course this happens with real credit cards and not EBT...

No Frills did the same thing a while back. The local one kept one lane with Visa access for a while to help with the transition. Small drops can turn into great waves.

I don’t think it should affect Visa debit cards, but I’m not 100% on that.

Unless it’s changed, Sam’s Club only takes Debit or their own (MasterCard) credit card. They don’t just take any MasterCard.
